International Fundraising Coordinator

Amsterdam

Full-time (37.5 hours per week)

Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) is the world’s largest grassroots environmental federation with 72 autonomous member groups around the world. FoEI aims to ensure that the struggles and experiences of local communities – especially those most affected by unsustainable development – are brought to bear on policies and practices at national and international levels. We focus on climate justice and energy, forests and biodiversity, food sovereignty, and economic justice, gender justice and environmental human rights defenders.

FoEI’s decentralized and democratic structure allows all member groups to participate in decision-making. A small International Secretariat (IS) in Amsterdam and a team of global staff supports the member groups, campaigns, programs, and other activities of the federation through fundraising, campaign coordination, trainings, communications, and information management.

FoEI is seeking an International Fundraising Coordinator to build and lead a comprehensive fundraising program to support the work of the federation, its regions, and programs. The position reports to FoEI's International Coordinator and may be based in FoEI's International Secretariat in Amsterdam or in a country where FoEI has a member group. The Fundraising Coordinator will lead two fundraisers in Amsterdam and Spain, serve as part of the management team for the IS and assist with the overall management of the IS.

Fundraising must be aligned with FoEI's mission and values and FoEI does not accept donations from corporations. FoEI's current budget of nearly €5 million comes primarily from development aid, foundation grants, and membership fees. FoEI aims to diversify and increase its funding base to provide long-term stability for the federation and enable its programs and regions to rise to the challenge posed by the multiple systemic crises we face.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

General

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive and strategic fundraising plan based on FoEI's long-term objectives in collaboration with the International Coordinator, fundraising team, other Secretariat staff, Executive Committee (board), International Program Coordinators and Regional Facilitators.
  • Identify and pursue new fundraising opportunities while supervising and guiding the work of FoEI's fundraising staff. Develop, facilitate, and coordinate collaborative FoEI proposals and grant application processes with member groups, FoEI's international programs and teams, regional structures, and allies.
  • Cultivate and deepen donor relationships through regular communications and networking. Represent FoEI in funding coalitions and collaborations and deploy FoEI Executive Committee members and federation to funder events as needed.
  • Lead fundraising efforts from US-based funders in coordination with Friends of the Earth United States (FoE US), serving as the primary liaison for FoEI member groups. Maintain regular communication with FoE US to ensure effective management and coordination of US-based fundraising initiatives.
  • Serve as part of the IS management team.

Planning, monitoring, and evaluating FoEI activities

  • Work with proposal teams to craft strong result frameworks and/or impact narratives for proposed projects. Assist in formulating SMART goals, milestones, indicators, and evaluation components for efficient reporting across projects.
  • Work with management team and grant management staff to ensure PMEL systems are in place and followed for grants managed by the International Secretariat.
  • Support grant management processes as needed.

Individual donors and communications

  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for fundraising from major individual donors, aligning with FoEI's structure and rules.
  • Work with the FoEI Communications team to develop a strategy for online fundraising. Provide input on the fundraising aspects of external communication tools including the website, social media and publications.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least five years of relevant experience and proven leadership in designing, managing and implementing fundraising programs, successfully raising at least 3-5M annually.
  • Experience in raising funds from US-based private foundations and familiarity with fundraising from the EU/countries that provide development aid.
  • Experience working with coalition-based funding processes, NGO networks, and social movements. Experience working on environmental and social justice with a strong affinity with FoEI's vision, mission, and values.
  • Ability to distill complicated programmatic strategies into comprehensive proposals and navigate complex application and reporting processes. Proficiency in communicating technical subjects to non-technical audiences and non-native English speakers.
  • Experience in developing and supporting implementation of PMEL systems. Must have experience supporting teams to build theories of change, result frameworks, and compelling objectives, indicators, and outcomes for proposed projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-cultural environment and a complex decentralized federation. Ability to support multiple projects and teams concurrently, with the flexibility to work independently and with remote international partners.
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills, complemented by excellent relationship management and representation skills.
  • Excellent command of both spoken and written English language; working knowledge of Spanish or French would be a strong advantage.

While the position may be based outside of the Netherlands, due to the need to work with the Netherlands-based team, it would be an advantage to be based in a similar time zone.
